Website Design Books

Designing Large-Scale Web Sites: A Visual Design Methodology
The major benefit of this book is that it focuses on the design of the entire site as opposed to simply designing individual, disconnected pages. Despite the title, the book is also useful for designers of medium-sized sites or even smallish sites. Because of its visual emphasis, this book is a good companion to the Information Architecture book.

Web Pages that Suck
This book uses "teach good design by showing bad design" approach. Funny, informative, and always to-the-point, this book will teach you on how to design a web site that doesn't suck! It also comes with a CD-ROM full of webtools.

Creating Killer Websites
This is a good style and layout guide, and is a brilliant introduction book on website design.

Information Architecture for the World Wide Web
This is without a doubt the most useful book on Web design on the market. The authors' emphasis is on the structure of the site and how to facilitate users' access to the information they need the most. Even though these are crucial issues in Web usability, they are often overlooked in the quest for cool pages.

Perl Books

Learning Perl, 2nd Edition
Probably THE best book ever written as an introduction to Perl. The 2nd edition now covers Perl 5 and there has also been a section added on Object-oriented programming. Everything in this book is relevant since you can't really write any sort of code in Perl without using the concepts in this book. A MUST read.

Programming Perl, 2nd Edition
Everyone bow down and pay homage to this magnificent piece of text. Written by Larry Wall (the creator of Perl), Tom Christiansen (a Perl guru), and Randall Schwartz (the author of Learning Perl), this book contains a thorough reference to every possible thing you might ever want to do in the language. If you are serious about programming in this language, there should be a copy of this book on your desk somewhere.

CGI Programming on the World Wide Web

Javascript Books

Javascript : The Definitive Guide 3rd Edition
JavaScript: The Definitive Guide provides a thorough description of the core JavaScript language and its client-side framework, complete with sophisticated examples that show you how to handle common tasks, like validating form data and working with cookies. The book also contains a definitive, in-depth reference section that covers every core and client-side JavaScript function, object, method, property, constructor, and event handler. This book is an indispensable reference for all JavaScript programmers, regardless of experience level.
This third edition of JavaScript: The Definitive Guide describes the latest version of the language, JavaScript 1.2, as supported by Netscape Navigator 4 and Internet Explorer 4. The book also covers JavaScript 1.1, which is the first industry-standard version known as ECMAScript. The new features of JavaScript 1.2, which are likely to be embodied in a later ECMAScript standard release, are clearly indicated, so that you can use them as appropriate in your scripts.

Designing With Javascript : Creating Dynamic Web Pages
A colourful guide to useful JavaScripts. Aimed at the JavaScript beginner, a good first book for people new to JavaScript to buy. The book contains 12 chapters, two of which are devoted to Dynamic HTML and Netscapes Layers. Includes a CD-ROM with all the code examples from the book.

Using Javascript (Special Edition)
The most popular scripting language on the web and the only client scripting language supported by Netscape and Microsoft, Javascript is perfect for users who want to add life to their web sites, but lack advanced programming skills. The Special Edition of Using Javascript is the most comprehensive reference available for this technology.

Professional IE4 Programming
This is not really a JavaScript book, however it does cover a lot of related technologies packed into Microsoft Internet Explorer 4. Many of the examples in the book use VBScript, but there are also examples in JavaScript. This is a big book written by many different authors. This book covers in depth Data Binding, useful if you want to have effective client side databases. There are 18 chapters in total, however, like the Internet Client SDK, there are lots of details missing. Still, its a worth while book to refer to.

Web Developer.com Guide to Building Intelligent Web Sites
As well as providing a basic intro to JavaScript for the newcomer, the main focus of the book is on developing "intelligent" Web sites. "Intelligent" Web pages are pages that can interact with their readers to offer the same high-quality, individualized information and advice that you would provide if you were present in person. They do this by storing and retrieving aspects of your knowledge and expertise. By handling tasks that would otherwise require human attention, intelligent pages can add considerable value to your Web site. This added value can accrue to you, the Web site developer, and to visitors to your site. Your Web pages can respond individually to each visitor, analysing his or her particular requirements and giving advice accordingly.

The first part of the book provides a gentle introduction to JavaScript basics. No previous experience of JavaScript is required. Nor is any previous programming experience assumed. Techniques are introduced with simple examples. The code is listed in full and is clearly explained - there is a Web site with all the code also. The book goes on to introduce more advanced "intelligent" programming techniques.

The Complete Idiot's Guide to JavaScript - Second Edition
This book covers everything from the extreme basics to quite complicated topics such as cookies and arrays. It is excellent if you want to learn JavaScript and have little or no previous programming experience, and also serves as a good reference guide. Its only downside is that it only covers JavaScript 1.1, and so misses out on the commands introduced with the newer version 1.2. This means that if you're looking for the most up to date book, you should look elsewhere. If, however, you want the most easy to follow guide around, I would definitely start here.

XML : A Primer
I heard this author speak about XML and bought the book since he convinced me. Having purchased the book, I understand the excitement. Four introductory chapters eased me into XML while giving enough detail for me to be assured of the feasibility of XML. The next 8 chapters add detail, lots of detail, with sometimes amusing, frequently useful examples. I actually enjoyed reading XML: A Primer instead of just pushing through it to reach the end. I would definitely tell anyone who's interested or simply curious to check this out: it would open doors to organization of documents as well as styles of web design.

Computer Lib/Dream Machines
Ted Nelson is the guy who coined the term "hypertext". This book (from 1974) contains much of his original writing and thinking about online media (the so-called "dream machine"). Nelson also envisioned a universal hypertext system linking all writing in the world. The Web is the first practical realization of his ideas, though the full "Xanadu" system was much more ambitious. Still worth reading today.

Webmaster's Guide to Lotus Domino
Domino is Lotus' new Internet server technology that lets any web client use web applications securely - including web pages, electronic commerce transactions, e-mail, and the creation of Intranets. This book covers the hardware and software requirements for setting up a Domino web server under Windows 95/Windows NT, and it includes practical examples of numerous Notes and HTML applications. It also covers the conversion of Notes documents to Domino so that they serve up correctly on an Intranet.

Burn Rate: How I Survived the Gold Rush Years on the Internet by Michael Wolff
Michael Wolff was one of the first to see the potential of the Internet and one of the pioneers of new media. As he laboured to build his own company, Wolff, a former journalist, knew he had stumbled on the seminal business story of the 1990s. Burn Rate is about the heart-in-your-throat struggles of being an entrepreneur. It is about witnessing an industry being born: the founding of Wired magazine, the launch of Time Warner's much-touted Pathfinder, the conflict between content centred on the East Coast and technology on the West Coast, the rise of the search engines, the dominance and dysfunctionality of America Online, and the thud of Microsoft stumbling and falling down on the Net.

Creating Dynamic Web Sites : A Webmaster's Guide to Interactive Multimedia
When users take one look at a Web site and click away, never to return, often it's because the site is the unfortunate result of multimedia turned media frenzy. A million new users plug into the Web each month, and capturing a loyal audience for your site requires that you achieve the ideal balance between content and style. In Creating Dynamic Web Sites, Scott Fisher demonstrates how to master this balancing act. Fisher's innovative approach first considers the audience -- the human being on the other side of the screen -- before he guides you through the bewildering array of technical and design issues that confront every Webmaster. An understanding of the psychology of user interaction enables you to plan graphics-intensive, highly interactive Web pages that are right for your audience and for your product or service..

Cascading Style Sheets: Designing for the Web
Cascading style sheets are without a doubt the way to manage presentation design across any medium or large sized website. For once the blurb on a book cover is right: the authors are indeed "the world authorities" on stylesheets, leading the Web Consortium's stylesheet project, so this is the ultimate reference for HTML stylesheets. Many examples of the slightly obscure features in CSS show how stylesheets can be used to achieve quite refined layouts and page-designs. It would be nice to say that you can pick up CSS from simply looking at examples, but good use actually requires a deeper understanding, as provided by this textbook.

Designing with Style Sheets, Tables and Frames
Provides a clear hands on guide to designing and creating sophisticated Web page layouts with style sheets, tables and frames. Written in the same straight forward, example rich style of Laura Lemay's best selling Teach Yourself Web Publishing books. CD ROM included.

    Insider Internet Marketing
'Insider Internet Marketing' exposes marketing strategies, methods, secrets, resources, tools, and tricks that prominent internet marketers have employed to explode online profits.
