Free Counters

A very important part of having a website is knowing how many visitors come to your website, how they get there, what keywords, search engines and directories people use most often to find your site. There are quite a few services on the internet that claim to give you that information. Many of these services are slow, unreliable, require huge banners and/or advertisements and give little useful information. Below are some of the many freely available counters.
  • Better Counter - Web Counter CGI/Java with Unique Features - Better Counter is the world's first CGI/Java counter that combines the feature to count all pages and all external links, the usability of a Java Applet and a complete analysis tool within a customisable page structure. Highly Recommended

  • AXS - A set of CGI Scripts for anyone who has access to a CGI-bin directory. This script generates hits, referrals, unique visitors and a lot more. It looks very good. Sample Stats. Recommended.

  • Dyno Counter - A simple Java based counter, that allows you to count how many visitors each individual page on your site gets or the entire website. However it loads extremely slowly, it wont count users with Java disabled, may cause problems with some browsers, allows people to clearly see how popular or unpopular your site is and it doesn't give any extra information. You can have as many counters as you want as long as the content on your site is free.

  • BraveNet - One of the many free services that this site offers are free counters. There are several different designs to choose from, although it shows all your visitors how many hits you got, without giving more detailed information like HitBox provides. Recommended.

  • Internet Counter - A simple customisable counter for your site in a number of different styles, including the number of hits for the last 30 days.

  • Extreme Tracking - High quality free stats, requires a small icon on your site. Tells you how many visitors you get, exactly how each one of them gets there, what browser, resolution, what operating system they are using, and what country they are coming from. Sample Stats. Highly Recommended. The only problem we have with this service is its customer support. Some of our visitors have complained about not getting assistance or responses to their questions.

  • FastCounter - A service from linkexchange (you don't have to be a member). It also allows you to get weekly e-mail reports. The downsides are that everybody sees your stats, gives free advertising to linkexchange (although you do get a counter), and it doesn't give any extra information like some of these other services do. Several counter styles are available. No porn or "inappropriate" sites allowed. Recommended.

  • FreeStats - Provides 2 different services, a free basic counter for your site with no advertisements. A stats service is also available providing basic information like how many visitors you have each day, or how much unique visitors you have each month.. However the stats service requires a big banner on your site, and is therefore not recommended. However the basic counter is Recommended.

  • HitBox - Although it does not provide statistics, this is the best free service on the internet that we have found for counting how many visitors your site gets. For viewing your stats, it has a 'live' Java version, and a HTML version updated every 30 seconds. Tells you more then just your hits you'll also get information regarding impressions, unique visitors, forecasts hits of the rest of the day and much more. As well it allows you to password protect your statistics. Highly Recommended.

  • ICDirect - A good counter service that counts daily, weekly and monthly visitors, and only requires a small icon on your site. It generates pretty detailed reports. Sample Stats. Using this counter also gets you listed in their directory, which can lead to more traffic for you. Highly Recommended.

  • JCount - JCount is a set of animated web page access counters that are available as free access counters. Although they are Java-based, they include a backup counter for those users who do not have Java support. You can choose from a selection of different digit types or change the number displayed at any time you choose by using a simple configuration screen. Paid subscription service available too.

  • NedStat - Not only a counter, but a very detailed stats service as well. Its very similar to Extreme-Dm. However they only tell you the referring pages of the last 25 visitors, unlike Extreme-dm's complete list. All it requires is a very small icon on your page. However one downside to this is that all your visitors will be able to see all your stats simply by clicking on the icon. NedStat is now also offering two-week trial periods for its more advanced and detailed NedStat Pro. NedStat also offers a version in Dutch. Our only complaint is that the service is down from time to time.

  • Mnet Web Services - A basic counter for your website, but with a twist. There are 40 separate unique customised counters, by placing an image next to the counter to represent your website, many of the images are animated. Only one per website. As well below the counter there is a small image linking to their website. The downsides to this counter are that everyone can see your hit count, and it doesn't give more detailed information such as hits per hour, hits on a particular day and such, but for a basic counter it's pretty good.

  • SiteFlow - Free for websites that receive up to 500 hits per day. Lots of detailed statistics, the entire list of features can be found here. It looks like a very good service for small sites. A password is required to view the stats, so you don't have to worry about everyone having access to them. It even has an option to make the counter invisible. Recommended.

  • TheCounter - Looks like a very good service. Here's a fast, reliable free page counter that offers loads of information about your site's visitors (such as domain, browser, OS, hourly weekday & monthly stats, resolution, colour depth and referring page). You can choose from four different counter styles and specify whether the counter appears in "traditional" style or invisible. They require no ads to be displayed on your page. Sample Stats. Highly Recommended.

  • WebPal - For sites that receive under 1000 hits a day. Has an option to make the counter invisible, and records the top 10 referring URL's. Recommended.

  • Crazy Counter - very weird counter. Available in java or animated GIF versions.

  • Cyberstats - Very quick to load. Has lots of information including hits for the past 7 days, a yearly total, detailed monthly stats, host name stats, search engine stats and more. They also offer a commercial version (for $16) that eliminates the banner that you display with the free version.

  • Direct Hit counter - A tracker that gives you daily, weekly and monthly stats for your web page.

  • Free Web Counter - An easy to set up and simple counter.

  • Free Web Page Hit Counter - This one lets you count multiple pages. It has many options. A free counter that allows you to count the hits on all your pages, view counts on all pages at the same time & view counts without viewing the page and incriminating the count. Easy to set up: just cut & paste some HTML and make minor modifications and you're all set.

  • IMChat Access Counter Service - This is a live counter, showing the number of people there are at that moment. Note: this is only handy for bigger sites, because otherwise the counter will stay on 1. (Note: this application is incompatible with MSIE 4).

  • IPStat - This tracking service disappeared for a while, but they're back now. They provide plenty of stats including "Hits for the last 21 days," "Hit per Country," "Hits per Hour," "Total Hits per Week Day," "Hits per Browser," and more. Free for personal pages.

  • LBInet free counter service - A very basic counter, but one of the quickest loading. They claim a 99.98 percent reliability rate. No X-rated sites allowed.

  • Page Count - A very good tracker with lots of information. But you have to put a large banner on your site. It provides lots of stats: How many people viewed your page; a breakdown of page views by date, day, and time; a list of where the requests for your page originated; the hostnames of the visitors! (up to 100 max.) and unlimited hits. Page Count is now also offering a "sports themed graphical page counter" that you can get here.

  • Siteflow Free Counters - Your site must at least have 500 hits a day to use this fast-growing free counter site that offers many options, such as ignoring your own hits to your site, as well as making your counter invisible. Setting up the counter is a straightforward process. They limit you to one counter per site.

  • Site-Stats - Another OK tracker which you have to put a large banner on your page for.

  • StarCounter - A very easy to set up counter; just cut and paste the code that is generated for you. They also offer many eye-catching digit styles to choose from.

  • SuperStats - An easy to set up tracker; just two html lines. One for the counter and one for the 400 X 40 banner that you have to display on your site. Serves up all the information about your visitors you could ask for. It allows you to see how many people have visited your site; total & unique visits; browser types; visiting domains; referral listings (how visitors found your site); what time of day they visited; traffic patterns and much more. SuperStats gives you five full days' worth of stats, and you may track as many pages as you wish.

  • WatchWise - This one is actually only free the first week. Then you have to buy it. WatchWise builds and maintains an historical utilisation and performance database for your Web site, and generates a comprehensive set of management and technical reports and graphs.

  • Web Pal Counter - This has hourly, daily and monthly reports. Each report contains accesses, browsers and hosts statistics. Not free, but a trial period available.

  • Web Right Services Counter - This service lets you choose from about 600 different digits styles! The only catch is that you also must display a 176X40 pixels banner, alongside the counter.

  • WebSide Story - A counter and a tracker in one. If you click on the counter, you get a stats page. Not strictly a free counter service, but it serves that purpose well. You sign up whatever pages you want and then they'll be ranked by impressions in the category of your choice. You can then view that page's stats and get such useful information such as forecasts on how many hits you can expect that day. This cool service is also useful for getting more hits, as other surfers who browse the list will click in from time to time.

  • WebTracker - This major free service offers a number of goodies. You get data on what browser your visitors are using, the operating system they're running, and you can tell if they're repeat visitors. You can also find out what days of the week are hot and find out what time of the day visitors come to your site. WebTracker data is updated in real-time. There is never the need to wait for a log file update; view your stats whenever you want to. Note: WebTracker has reported problems with their service with the Internet Explorer browser, version 4.

  • Better Counter - This Java-based service counts all your site's pages (a maximum of 20 using the free version) Features include complete hits analysis within a customisable page structure. You get details like internal & external references. Thus, you can find out which links, search engines or banners give you the most hits. Free for up to 20 pages and 500 hits/day.
